Etymologies can be enlightening. The Hebrew word “rachamim” (רָחַם) used in Exodus 34:6-7 is usually translated as “compassion” or “mercy.” However, its literal meaning is “womb.” In the Torah, rachamim expresses how God feels about us — like a mother feels about a baby in her womb.
