The word irony has its roots in the ancient Greek eironeía (εἰρωνεία), which means to “feign ignorance.” Socrates used it often with his students by “playing dummy” — pretending not to understand and asking a subtle but revealing question. The student would, then, scratch his head and realize that Socrates wasn’t a dummy at all — he was.
