In Saving the Appearances, Owen Barfield’s says that in ancient times, phenomena themselves were different because people looked at them with a different set of eyes - the eyes of participation.

This intrigued me. Does it mean that the tree WAS something else for, say, Plato or Pithagoras? If so, what was it?
