The Nativity story opens with one of the most striking paradoxes imaginable — the first people to recognize and worship the newborn God were astrologers. In the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Rite, there is a short hymn, Troparion, that sheds light on how the ancients viewed this fact:

Your Nativity, O Christ our God,
has shone upon the worl…
