Why Tolkien and Lewis Disliked Cars

The Elves were deceived by him – they thought the technology Sauron offered was “neutral,” and they could use it for a good purpose.

Curiously, both Tolkien and Lewis disliked technology in general and cars in particular. Tolkien referred to the internal combustion engine as an “infernal combustion engine.” Lewis said he was glad his father didn’t have a car.

He wrote,

The truest and most horrible claim made for modern transport is that it 'annihilates space.' It does. I…
