My first gut reaction to the idea of "seem fairer and feel fouler" is a heartfelt "Lord God!" Because it has to do with people purifying their hearts, allowing spiritual insight, such that they can ignore the hissing of their pre-existing prejudices and listen to the "still, small voice" (1 Kings, 19:12) of the Spirit. By which I mean you are so right... And we need this to happen so much...
One problem of focusing on the images, instead of the reality they represent, is that you ignore how they "feel." Early American Western movies tried to help viewers by having the hero wear a white hat or ride a white horse.
you really are from Serbia! that's the old American trope that black folks hate: what is good is always white, what is bad is always in black. "if you're white, you're alright; if you're black, step back."
it makes it confusing when you're mixed. (smile) but nothing's binary in real life and why America is like a pretend make believe fantasy world...
How about the Lone Ranger and the cartoon Snidley Whiplash was it? Lol! My Mom and I are going to be real Patriotic tomorrow and watch a DVD about the colonization of America at the expense of the Indigenous peoples
put "The Westerner" on your list, with Gary Cooper and my mad crush, Walter Brennan, with his missing teeth and all. i fell for him over Gary Cooper, he's sooo funny and smart, and the one i'd stare at. he's that Vaudevillian actor i was talking about. just LOOOVE Walter Brennan with that awe i also felt when i saw Guilietta Massina in "Nights of Cabiria."
and yes, do a binge starting with old westerns. they're as current as ever and the old ones still have some of the old great character actors from vaudeville. but they're about progress crushing the frontier and the free way of life. they're ALL about that. railroad being built through town and gotta crush the little guys and fence things in.
just like NOW. only no where to run to except deep into one's own madness...
I guess I can’t say that I have ever had a true friend then.
They are rare! But I have had a couple.

It happens to me. Every once in a while a need a friendly nudge to wake up and realize I am in the clutches of an idol. Thanks, Phillip!

Thanks, Jerry. It's a good question: How does an image “feel”?
Interesting, I didn't notice it. Will watch some westerns:))))
